Fascinating Things : Issue 73

Apologies for the lack of written FT action of late but i’ve been waylaid by the combination of a kidney stone and a lot of activity around German Shepherd Records.

As usual there is a lot to catch up on so i’ll dive straight in…….

Ash Borer will release their third full length album, ‘The Irrepassable Gate’ on December 2nd, 2016 through Profound Lore Records on CD/DLP/Digital formats. Psychic Violence will handle a cassette edition as well as a deluxe art edition of the DLP to be released at a later date than the standard run.

Jason Simon, best known for his work as the guitarist and singer for the seminal heavy psych band Dead Meadow, releases his new solo record Familiar Haunts. On Familiar Haunts Jason takes his love of the haunting Appalachian banjo playing of Dock Boggs and old time Americano Folk music to create a heady mix where wheezing organs come up against Maestro like drum machines and delivers on the weirdness inherent in old folk/country and blues tunes.

Members of the Melvins (Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover), At The Drive-In (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) and Le Butcherettes (Teri Gender Bender) have formed a new rock band, Crystal Fairy.

Crystal Fairy’s self-titled debut arrives February 24 via Ipecac Recordings with the song “Drugs On The Bus” streaming now. A limited edition 7” featuring “Drugs On The Bus” and “Necklace of Divorce” was available October 10 via Amphetamine Reptile.

Sacred Bones Records will be releasing the new 12” release Ghosthouse from NYC heavy industrial duo Uniform, ahead of a full-length record due out in early 2017.

For the uninitiated, Uniform are old friends Ben Greenberg (ex-The Men, Hubble, and the producer/engineer responsible for much of the Sacred Bones catalog) and Michael Berdan (ex Drunkdriver, York Factory Complaint) and formed in New York City in 2013. Uniform open the hood on Godflesh’s engine and make some dangerous adjustments, creating grimacing punk-laced deluges of distortion and decay that often speed up in to punishing extreme metal levels of intensity.

Ghosthouse shares a basic configuration with the previous Uniform releases, but the tools have evolved far beyond their initial drum machine and bass synth setup. These songs have grown from a broader palette of sounds – shots, explosions, implosions, impacts, ricochets, collapse; the sounds of conflict, war, and destruction that we witness every day. The three songs on Ghosthouse show the incisiveness that Greenberg and Berdan now have at their command. The result is the most sonically confrontational Uniform material to date.

OST is the mental-illness-rock project from Irish born, New York based musician Shane Harrington. Growing up in the murder capital of Europe Limerick City, (or Stab City as it is referred to in the media) Harrington spent the first half of his life staying inside, drawing and playing music. Before leaving Southill (the most crime ridden ghetto in Limerick City) at 16, he lived in a housing estate between two feuding gangs. Here, his family home (as well as his fathers car) were set fire to multiple times. Prior to this his house had been burgled while he was still inside, he had witnessed the attempted murder of a neighbor and his mentally unwell mother and politically active father had divorced. The following years gave way to art college, touring Europe with DIY punk bands and eventually moving to New York.

After being asked to be the new guitarist with NY noise-rock legends Skeleton Key, as well as curating shows and showing art with the likes of Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Harrington finished work on his 3rd album. Uncaused is the result of two years of experimentation, a tapering off from high dose SSRIs and a deep researching into some fringe philosophies.The lyrics deal with themes of mental illness, trauma, psychology, therapy industries and social issues. Guitars, bass, sequencers, synths, organ, art, engineering and mixing were all handled by Harrington.

Fascinating Things : Issue 70

A bit of a long gap between this blog and the last one – mostly due to being busy organising gigs and releases for German Shepherd . We are doing two stages at this years Salford Music Festival, on Friday 30th September and 1st October,  and there’s been a touch of fettling required due to various unforseens. It’s all settled now and we have four bands on the first night – The Junta, Bouquet of Dead Crows, The Scissors and Kit B, and five bands on the second – Rose & The Diamond Hand, Taser Puppets, Poppycock, JD Meatyard and West Coast Sick Line. The line-up is very attractive and it’s free so i’m hoping a few will turn up at the Eagle Inn in Sunny Salford. The major issue at the moment is the great amount going on in Greater Mancunia and the challenge is to get those hardy souls who like cutting edge music out into the night to watch the bands. There may be further antipodean adventures later in the year, but i’ll keep my powder dry on that one. Anyhow the cricket season is nearly over which means I should have some spare time. One more match to go………

So, as I have not done anything on the blog for a couple of weeks, things have mounted up. Of necessity therefore here are some brief notes to whet your musical whistle……

Et Tu Brucé return with a new video for “Laska”, which is on their eponymous album. A band which manages the clever balancing act between a recognisable sound and being innovative without resorting to genre cliches and industry cloning. A delightful tune well worthy of a listen.

Following the release of their self-titled debut album in 2011, and 2014’s Mutations, Obake are back. Their third LP, entitled “Draugr”, signals both a return to the origins of the band “and a purification of their sound” whatever that means. It is  released on October 28th via Rare Noise Records. No material as yet but I will share on receipt.

Cardiff’s Slowly Rolling Camera have announced the release of a new one called “All Things” on 4th November…….soulful vocally with some interesting stuff going on behind it by the sounds of it….one to watch out for I would venture.

Cinematic post-rock, a bit Sigur Ros but less ethereal, is the order of the day from Floating In Space. New album “The Edge of Light ” is out on October 14th, You get some glimpses of the  content here below. A rich confection of sounds…..

So the promo on this next one says “Honesty comes in many forms, with DUNT, it’s a clattering blow to the consciousness via an Edinburgh-based genre-melding punk/speed metal four-piece.” My immediate reaction revolved around what the hell the drummer was up to in the video…..i’m not sure on this one, i’ll leave you to make your own mind up, i’ve never been a big skate punk fan….but it will get some airplay on one of the podcasts.

Graney and Moore are back with a new one, as part of the “one release a month” project for 2016, and it’s a bit special. When DG goes for the jugular on “political” issues he does it with some style and class. The object of his ire on this one is fairly clear and more power to his elbow for that. Musically Dave and Clare never fail to disappoint and the variety of material in this run of singles has been pretty damn fine. I love the cover image ……..

Talking of matters Melbournian, a plea to the chaps at Witch Hats to release their latest album “Deliverance” in digital or indeed CD form so that those of us who don’t do vinyl can have a copy. Unless I am missing something I can’t find a non-vinyl version anywhere.If you aren’t blown away by the opening track “Weekend Holocauster” then I fear for your mortal soul.

And to conclude our diversions in Melbourne, shoe-gazers, Bloodhounds on My Trail, have a new single out called  ‘Over The Wall’ via Texas-based Moon Sounds Records. Reverb drenched stuff which has a timely autumnal feel. Vocally it touches on Barney Albrecht in my head for some reason. Real wall of sound stuff.

Back to the nothern hemisphere and northern britain and I am contractually obliged to advise you of the release of a new one by Moff Skellington, his 31st album. Moff’s been making Mark E. Smith look like a bit of a slacker of late, with his fourth album this year. Sublimely titled “The Gloating Mustards of Error” the bard of Abstercot is in fine fettle exploring, as he does, that strange place between dreams and reality embodied by Eddodi. I live in eternal hope that the rest of the known universe will eventually catch on to what this guy is up to, his unique use of language and musical instruments deserves recognition in an “entertainment” business stuffed with tribute bands and industry clones.

Sofia Härdig‘s new one appears to be about maps and car parks at least in video terms. Musically it sort of hovers between Banshees and PJH, the promo people aim to draw a Sonic Youth comparison which I don’t get, and a Pixies comparison, which I sort of get…..good stuff

The promo says “Newcastle based alternative five piece Bernaccia mix choral and tribal rhythms together with sweeping soundscapes and neo-psychedelic guitars. September 2016 sees the release of their next single “Angel””. I say,  the revolving door of post-punk, pre-goth, pre-shoegaze comes around again with a nod towards the noir cinemania of say Crime and the City Solution, and one or two other things of that ilk, it reminds me of a cold November night in a half empty Hacienda in 1983 , you know before youth culture finally cottoned on……said track is featured on the most recent Aural Delights Podcast – see how I slipped the shameless self promotion there whilst you were not looking…..?

To conclude, following on from the  recent “Bath White” EP by 50FOOTWAVE , a further release from indie music legend Kristin Hersh, renowned for her solo work and as frontwoman of  Throwing Muses. Called ‘Wyatt at the Coyote Palace’, the double CD and book combination releases in the UK on October 28, 2016 . Ms Hersh is on tour in UK and Eire during November landing at Gorilla,Manchester on November 13th for those of you who live around these parts. I’ve asked for a review copy of the new album for which I wait with baited breath….

Fascinating Things : Issue 68

It’s been a busy old year and as we are well into the second half thereof there doesn’t appear to be any slackening of pace of new and exciting outsider music. Whilst the mainstream seems obsessed with churning out the same old clones of increasingly irrelevant music or raking over the work of deceased stars, if you get below that into the real world of music you will find lots of exciting things…..

I’m pleased to announce we will be putting on two shows as part of this years Salford Music Festival. On 3oth September and 1st October we are at the excellent Eagle Inn on Collier Street in Salford, just off the Inner Relief Road, and have two excellent line-ups. Both gigs are free entry, Friday will see Cambridge bands Bouquet of Dead Crows and The Scissors up for a visit, as well as techno guru The Junta, and the increasingly legendary Manc/Salf stalwarts Kit B.  Saturday sees Rose and the Diamond Hand, Taser Puppets, Poppycock, JD Meatyard and West Coast Sick Line. More details of the rest of this years Salford Music Festival will follow.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (At The Drive In/Mars Volta) has premiered the video for ‘Running Away’ from the latest in his ongoing series of solo albums, “Corazones”.

The film, which was directed by Violeta Felix and shot by Adrian Blanco, features Omar in a series of Los Angeles-based encounters with friends who might not be terribly happy to see him. Guests include Buzz Osborne, Teri Gender Bender, John Frusciante, Robin Laananen, Tatiana Velazquez, Aura T-09 and Eva Gardner.

Omar, in partnership with Ipecac Recordings, recently announced the release of a series of solo albums, which kicked off on July 15 with “Sworn Virgins”. The previously unreleased albums were recorded from 2008 to 2013, while he lived in Zapopan, Mexico and continued when he returned to El Paso. The titles are released on a bi-weekly basis with the first spate of albums running through the end of the year. Each album will see a digital release with a limited number of physical copies (CD) available on Rodriguez-Lopez’s various live outings. A limited edition CD/LP box set will become available in 2017, once the full run of releases are available.

New York City synthesis trio Forma have shared the title track from their third LP, “Physicalist”, which is released via kranky on September 23rd.

Since their acclaimed self-titled debut in 2011, Forma have been perfecting a distinctive style of improvised kosmische and minimalism that blends swirling arpeggios, ambient soundscapes, and driving motorik beats. “Physicalist” is described as a sprawling, double LP journey featuring new member and multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett, who replaced Sophie Lam in 2014. The first Forma album to include acoustic instrumentation, Physicalist owes more to American composers like Harold Budd or Terry Riley than Klaus Schulze and other Krautrock visionaries. The album was recorded during marathon sessions at Brooklyn’s Gary’s Electric studio, and is packaged in a gatefold jacket with original artwork by Robert Beatty and a liner notes essay by writer and critic Michael Barron. Physicalist was mastered by Bob Weston.

Formed in 2010 by Mark Dwinell in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Forma released their first two full-length LPs on John Elliot’s influential Editions Mego imprint, Spectrum Spools. Physicalist is the first full-length statement from the new lineup, which also includes founding member and percussionist George Bennett. The double LP contains two distinct halves; the first consisting of rhythmic compositions derived from the trio’s formidable array of modular and vintage synthesizers, and the second breaking from the grid with ambient, free-flowing experiments on piano, flute and acoustic percussion. The album marks a departure from “Cool Haptics”, the group’s techno-leaning 2014 EP on The Bunker New York.

Barry Adamson is back in Manchester, he is co-curating and presenting along with Jason Wood (Artistic Director: Film at HOME and Professor of Film at Manchester Metropolitan University) a series of films for HOME’s Soundtrack Season. Commencing on Aug 5th with a screening of David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997), He will be taking part in an interview and Q&A with Jason to discuss his involvement with David Lynch and the working processes utilsed to score the film. On Aug 6th he will be introducing a screening of Johnathan Glazer’s Under the Skin (2013) and talking about the score by Micachu and the Shapes composer Mica Levi. On September 23rd, Neurosis release their eleventh full-length, “Fires Within Fires”. Three decades in the making, and following 2012’s Honor Found In Decay, the album is a testament both to the history and future of Neurosis. In true Ouroborean style, Fires Within Fires gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable. Striking the band’s signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, dense sonic heaviness and reflective space. Fires Within Fires is succinct, raw and deeply soulful, an all-encompassing reminder that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength. The first and only glimpse of the music on this record, prior to release date, is sampled in a new video which has emerged, here you can also marvel at the exquisite album artwork from the renowned Thomas Hooper…

“Listening Matter” is the sixth kranky album from Thomas Meluch under the nom de plume Benoît Pioulard. It arrives on the 10th anniversary of his first LP “Précis”, and offers a rekindled focus on self-examination, as well as a return to vocal-based pop structures following the mostly instrumental “Sonnet” (2015). Recording for the Listening Matter began during a period of grief, turmoil and self-medication, and continued throughout two years of growth and healing. Reflections on vice (“Layette”, “Anchor as the muse”), virtue (“Narcologue”) and death (“A mantle for Charon”) feature equally in this concise release.

Austin, Texas-based Bellringer, founded by guitarist/vocalist Mark Deutrom, releases new album “Jettison” on August 26th. The live vehicle for the music of Deutrom – formerly of West Coast hardcore punk outfit, Clown Alley, and Melvins, and others – the bandcurrently also incldues the contributions of musicians James Flores, Aaron Lack, Monique Ortiz, and Brian Ramirez. Recorded in Austin earlier this year, the album was fully written and produced by Deutrom. The six  tracks cover several genres with nearly forty minutes of action, fusing elements of psychedelic and exploratory rock with bluesy and jazzy jam elements, all coalescing in the signature Deutrom style.

Flying Machines play emotive and dramatic music, drawing upon influences as diverse as jazz, pop, progressive rock and metal to create an utterly unique and modern sound. Formed by guitarist Alex Munk in 2014, Flying Machines feature some of the most innovative young musicians to emerge in recent years from the UK jazz scene – Matt Robinson on piano/keyboards, Conor Chaplin on electric bass and Dave Hamblett on drums. Centred on Munk’s unique compositional approach, the band fuse visceral improvisation with anthemic melodies and lusciously textured soundscapes. A decadent mash up of prog rock energy, free-wheeling improvisations and ambient meditations that never detract from the emotive lyricism at the music’s core. Their eponymous debut is released on 14th October coupled with a gig at the Vortex. A lengthy tour follows in the New Year with a gig at The Wonder Hill on Shudehill in Manchester on 16th February.

Shoegaze electronic crossover trio Vibrissae have signed to Italian label Vipchoyo Sound Factory to release their debut LP ‘Somewhere Away’. In advance of the album’s release, they are releasing their first reverb-filled driven single ‘Need’. Formed and are based in Portland, Oregon,but the three members of Vibrissae hail from different continents. Vocalist Imber Lingard comes from Australia, Emma Bell was born in Malaysia, and Aaron Bell is native to the USA. The trio found common ground in their shared love of shoegaze, electronic music, and modern rock, . Vibrissae’s debut output is the result of over three years of rehearsal and recording. Their music crosses over multiple genres, combining and alternating elements from electronic rock, synth pop, dark wave and shoegaze.

Fascinating Things : Issue 62

in And the summer rolls in with it’s misery inducing mix of ridiculous heat and torrential rain, there’s quite a lot going on but frankly I can’t be bothered getting out of my sweat soaked chair to attend. Instead a ramble through some of the better things that have been sent my way in recent weeks…..

A current obsession is The Drones (no not the ones from Manchester 1976 but the Australian current band). Their recentish album “Feelin’ Kinda Free” manages to do what a lot of people cannot seem to deliver these days which is sound like nothing else that’s prowling around the ether at the moment. The exciting thing (and it takes a lot to get me excited these days) is their unique use of guitars to create new sounds and the adoption of some interesting dance flavoured rhythms on the album. Their back catalogue is equally fascinating and is worth investigating.

From Atlanta, Georgia Gringo Star  (it took a while to sink in with me but the relevance of the name becomes more apparent when you hear the music) have just signed with Nevado Music and have a new album called “The Sides And In Between” out on August 26th.  Pending that they have a single out called ‘Rotten’ which according to the promo:

“presents Gringo Star’s love for nostalgic sounds of rock in the style of The Kinks. Sat between The Shins’ folky twang and Tame Impala’s generosity on the reverb, the melody beautifully shines through the raw psychedelic finish.”

My immediate reaction on seeing the vid was it felt like the The Beatles to some extent, it may have been the Rickenbackers that sparked that thought, or maybe there’s a bit of Yardbirds in there somewhere. The forthcoming album, which I haven’t heard yet, is described elsewhere as a the bands own version of British invasion rock with the sounds of The Animals, Tame Impala and Buddy Holly. I get The Animals reference.

On our record label we have the excellent Bouquet of Dead Crows from sunny Cambridge, and they can seen working as the backing band for Gavin Chappell- Bates who has a single out on the back of his recent album. It is the opening track from the album “Church of Rock and Roll”. Sadly I don’t have a video or a soundcloud at this point but search him out on You Tube and you will see what he is up to.

Alternative electronic producer Dean Garcia, the man behind seminal alternative rock band Curve and electronic dream pop duo SPC ECO, has joined forces with Preston Maddox of post-punk noise-rock band Bloody Knives in a new project, called S T F U. Their debut LP ‘What We Want’, planned for release on July 29, is all about unfolding hypnotic loops that gradually progress to uptempo electronics, trip-hop laden beats, lush noise entwined with shimmering synths, and Maddox’s hazy trance-like vocals. Dreamy with a shoegaze backbone this is epic stuff.

Vogue Dots are Canadian and deliver moody, layered pop styled music…..comparisons with Beth Orton have been made, which means nothing to me, but it sounds nice….

Two years after releasing ‘Best-Selling Dreams’ to wide acclaim around the world, Novanta will soon release his new album “Hello We’re Not Enemies” on Seashell Records. The first single from this release is ‘Goðafoss’. Novanta is Manfredi Lamartina, a musician who is originally from Palermo but has been based in Milan for many years now. On this album, Novanta further evolves his sound, falling effortlessly between shoegaze, post-rock and electronica. Sounds like relentless euro-pop to me…..

Those lovely people at Acid Cosmonaut Records have shared a preview from the second album from DSW.  I got a serious 70s flashback when I heard it, pretty heavy blues rock with a metal undercurrent. Lots of wah-wah going on here….!

Wolves In The Throne Room  re-release their 2006 debut album “Diadem Of 12 Stars” through their own Artemisia Records on 17th June. . Its raw analog sound in many ways pays homage to the band’s varied influences: the harsh black metal of Norwegians Ulver and Emperor or their American counterparts Weakling and Ludicra, the monolithic heaviness of Neurosis and Swans, the sorrowful Funeral Doom of My Dying Bride and in places, the mournful goth of Dead Can Dance.  Described by guitarist Nathan Weaver as the rawest and most “punk” of their five full-length releases Diadem Of 12 Stars was recorded live to tape in Oakland by Tim Green. Joined in the studio by Jamie Myers (Hammers Of Misfortune, Sabbath Assembly) and Dino Sommese (Asunder. Dystopia), every song was recorded in one or two takes and the album was mixed without the aid of a computer. Originally released on a small DIY label and unavailable physically for many years, this reissued version has been carefully remastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. It’s intense stuff but worth the effort if you want a different take on the sub-genre.

After Ian Moss left Hamsters (Manchester)  in early 1981 the band continued with drummer Steve Middlehurst’s wife Tricia taking the vocalist position before she in turn left due to pregnancy . At this juncture , now down to a three piece, guitarist Bobby Williams became lead vocalist . Wayne Edwards found a studio in Middleton and the band was captured for posterity after explaining to the engineer they most definitely were not after a Wishbone Ash sound. Lo-fi, wonderfully cack-handed, and cocking a snook at the wider music world these three tracks are previously unreleased

 

 

 

 

Fascinating Things : Issue 60

I am somewhat distracted by the cricket season at the moment, and Lancashire are playing remarkably well in case you are the least bit interested, so matters music tend to get shoehorned into the odd 60 minutes or so I can scrape out of the day. There’s a busy week ahead with and Espen Eriksen gig on Thursday and Ed Blaney’s album launch on Friday, the latter being a handy five minute walk from this computer at the rather excellent chinese nosherie in sunny Eccles Town Centre. I’m expecting Ed’s album in the next day or so, and a review will follow hopefully before I attend the launch. There’s been a lot of good gigs on around here but I can’t do the cricket and the gigs or else nothing would get done. There is a huge backlog of things to listen to so i’ve loaded up the Nano so I can have a listen whilst sun-bathing (I wish) at Old Trafford.

So what have we got  for you this week?…….

British shoegaze pioneers Ride have been busy in the past year, including a massive tour, but the band’s frontman Mark Gardener has continued to support his side project Pure Phase Ensemble 4. Their album ‘Live at SpaceFest!’ is the first long-play, featuring Gardener in all his shoegaze space rock glory, to be released since the 1990s. Pure Phase Ensemble 4 ‘Live at SpaceFest!’ is currently available on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify and the CD is also available on the Nasiono Records website.

Greek hardcore crew Sarabante share a track from their incoming second LP, Poisonous Legacy, which is released on Southern Lord this summer. Loud and scabrous stuff…

Bluesy psych trio Mother Upduff  from Vancouver have a new one out….nice jazzy vibe to this one…

This reminds me of something from the 80s, if only my fact soaked brain could remember what, nice chunky bass sound….they are Eau Rouge from Stuttgart…

Kranky will be releasing the alluring debut full length, Precious Systems, from New Orleans trio MJ Guider (led by Melissa Guion) on July 15th. An ambitious ambient-based record which is described as “subterranean pop and sunset electronics”, it floats between shoegaze and drone in a reverb soaked haze….

Groovy stuff from the peoples republic of Cambridge and better than the average so-called psych stuff floating around the music-web at the moment, there’s a a restless funky edge to it all which ticks several boxes at once…..they are called Psychic Lemon and I think you should listen to them….

Wigan power house trio Deepshade return with their raucous fusion of psyched up alternative/grunge rock with the announcement of their ‘Time’ video single release.
Forming in late 2013 they delivered their debut album ‘Everything Is Popular Is Wrong’ in early 2015. The band David Rybka (Vox/Guitar), Tom Doherty (Bass) and Paul Barlow (Drums).  Good stuff…..

Just in case you think i’m slipping here’s some Dave Graney to finish with this week. Dave is big jazz fan, and often “annoys” the listeners to his excellent RRR Radio Show “Banana Lounge Broadcasting” by peppering it with selected music from the genre. Here he further explores the funky jazz sounds which have regularly popped up during his career.  Elements of this track came from “I like To be Haunted” from the oustanding 2007  album We Wuz Curios, which I append below for comparison purposes. Dave says  “New arrangement , instruments and vocal. New song!”….. it’s a “mistLY” tune, for those of you keeping up with the multiple band names DG uses. I’m really liking this one track a month release schedule at the moment. It concentrates the mind.
