Music Diary #36 – 14th February 2012 plus Salford Music Scene Radio Show

I’d been concerned for some time that there was not enough new local stuff to play on this radio show – however things have improved of late and the selection on this weeks broadcast reflects a very healthy scene across Salford & Manchester and the surrounding boroughs (with a sideways trip to Margate to reflect a forthcoming extravaganza at the Crescent).

So the track listing for this show is – and you can listen here

1 Naked Veins Ride EP
2 The Kindest of Thieves Personal Best Ever The Optimist
3 Boomin Chocolate Demo
4 The Christophers Wisdom Single
5 Kingdom Lost Reverence Demos

Music Diary #32 – 7th February 2012 and Salford Music Scene Radio Show

And since the last diary entry:

  1. The new Tim Berne album on ECM which is rather fine indeed – typical Berne performances however this time with a modicum of modal meandering which is perhaps more in keeping with his first leader role on the famous record lable.
  2. A couple of new tracks from the impressive Comet Sands  available here – tracks 1 and 2 are the new ones. And very fine they are as a well.
  3. The Christophers  are offering a free download of their new single “Wisdom” here – up to their usual standard I have to say. You can see them  live opening for Brooklyn based band The Static Jacks at `the Manchester Roadhouse on February 26th (sunday) from 7pm. For more info visit www.thechristophersmusic.co.uk
  4. Enjoying the Paper Tiger Illuminated EP on Mind on Fire – fascinating mix of styles.
  5. Impressed with the sound of Naked Veins from Swinton – just waiting for some tracks from the band.
  6. As reviewed elsewhere on the blog the new EP from The Kindest of Thieves is rather yummy.

Vis a vis this weeks Salford Music Scene show – the mix is as follows….and you can hear it here……

1 Mr Heart Boredoms Device The Hide
2 Kill for Company Black and White Demo
3 Whipcord Dread Stop Bop Whipcord
4 Solar Race Get Ahead Homespun
5 Kill Pretty Brown Eyes Live at Brixton Jamm
6 The Portlands Blue Sea Blues EP
7 Death to the Strange On the Clock Album Demos
8 Boomin Buckaroo Single
9 Kingdom Lost I Hope You See Demo
10 The Fiction Bragging Rights The Greatest Hits EP
11 Stolen Mushrooms Out of Zone Out of Zone
12 The Portlands Every Word I Sing EP
13 Kingdom Lost Better Than Life Demo
14 The Fall Deer Park Words of Expectation

Music Diary #28 – 30th January 2012

Well I got to the end of the first month nearly on an entry a day but last weeks gig organisation got the better of me so I’ve bowed to the inevitable and am going to do these when I can rather than when I should.

So in the last few days there has been music in from:

  • Boomin – a 3-piece pop/rock band from Wigan, who are currently recording their debut album which is scheduled for release in early summer this year. They sent me two songs and I was mightily impressed.
  • The Wonderful Sound the Cinema Organ – are a nine piece from Leeds who combine a great jazz sound with some strong songs. Highly recommended.
  • The Fiction – a three piece from Manchester (well Leigh if I am being geographically accurate)  who have an EP out in March called “The Greatest Hits” – powerful rock trio with a good melodic sound.
  • Rebellious Jukebox – reacquainting myself with the sound of this band who have a new single out soon – via the lovely Longevity lable – if you have not caught their “Slave to Lust” yet then I suggest you do yourself a favour. Any band that names itself after a track by The Fall is likely to get my attention anyway
