World of Jazz Podcast #14 – 31st January 2013 – A Duke Ellington Special

This week the focus is on the Columbia Studio Albums of Duke Ellington of the 1950s….

The Complete Columbia Studio Albums Collection 1951-1958, showcases several phases in the Ellington Orchestra’s development. There are extended versions of hits, new suites, and new collaborations. The albums presented in the nine-disc box that I am featuring  are Masterpieces, Ellington Uptown, Blue Rose (with Rosemary Clooney), A Drum Is a Woman, Such Sweet Thunder (a commission from the Stratford Festival),Ellington Indigos, Black Brown and Beige with Mahalia Jackson, Bal Masque, and Cosmic Scene.

I have taken a cut from each album in the box-set for the mix and in between, other than three Sonny Clark tracks from the “Conception” box set, I have chosen work by other jazz artists  interpreting Ellington’s compositions.
