Salford Music Scene – 14th June 2011

On this show a lot of new material which has come my way recently……

  • Girl Peculiar – Destiny – (Single)- released last week – great new single from Jenny and co available from I Tunes/Amazon.
  • Vinny Peculiar – My Generation (I said Goodbye) – Other People Like Me (Album)  – fantastic new album from Vinny is out digitally on 4th July and as cd/vinyl on 12th September. His first album “Gone” (not Get Gone as I say on the show) can be downloaded free from the website.
  • Black Lights – We Can Fly – In the Dark (EP) – play Manchester Academy on 9th July
  • Kranius – Crucified (Single) – I’m not sure how many metal bands there are active in the city at the moment but Kranius are the front runners with a great sound. Check out their Bandcamp page for lots of older material. The gig I announced on the show on 23rd has now been put back to 29th  and they are also on at the Crescent on 2nd July along with Not Above Evil. Soma Dark and one TBC.
  • AAAK – Everything’s Real  (Exclusive Demo) – Ding has sent me some new work which I will be featuring in a fortnight. The dynamic duo play The Bar Galleon, Blackpool on 22nd July and the next Helmets for Men at Islington Mill the following week. This is a great track that they put together a while back. Looking forward to seeing them live again.
  • Periscope – The Sunshine House – the ever ebullient Mr Swinney has been extremely busy as the album draws towards its inevitable completion around Christmas time (approx) – this is a rather marvellous up tempo glorious celebration of stuff with a stunning bass riff
  • Gods Gift – Another Government Day (Exclusive Track to Salford City Radio) – worth playing this again – excellent return for a great band.
  • Vinny Peculiar – Artrockers – Other People Like Me (Album) – evoking the great times in mid 70s when Art Rock emerged in full force…..excellent song. Any song which mentions Cadbury’s Flake is ok with me.
  • Magazine -I want your heart –  Second Hand Daylight (Album) Given Vinny mentioned Howard in the previous song I thought I would play a classic from the ex denizen of Lower Broughton Road.
  • The Blimp – Art Job (from the band) – do not play Ruby Lounge on 23rd June now as I announced, cancelled unfortunately,  and I’m not sure about the Guzzlin’ Goose gig on 25th June – I suggest you check their Facebook page for updates.  A remarkable track  this from a remarkable band. All three of them are adopted Salfordians now. And it completes a nice little trilogy of arty tunes.
  • Kranius – All The Same – Evilution (EP)
  • Periscope – Ethereal (Pre-release)
  • Black Lights – In the Dark – In the Dark (EP)
  • Periscope – Quicksand (Pre-release)

Salford Music Scene – Salford Against the Cuts Special

A veritable cornucopia of aural loveliness a lot of it being focused on bands that are playing at the Salford Against the Cuts gig  on Friday night at Islington Mill:
1 Mountains – Thousand Square  Air Museum – is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, a Brooklyn duo that specializes in the kind of ultra-layered, birds-eye instrumental statements that often aim to match the scale of their name. “Thousand Square” hails from their forthcoming Air Museum LP (out May 10 via Thrill Jockey), an effort that finds them taking their earthen, largely acoustic take on soundscaping, and sending it through an array of pedals and modular synthesizers to craft a true “electronic” odyssey. Check it out here if you want to listen at your own leisure  Mountains: “Thousand Square”.  Why are you playing this on Salford Music Scene Robert? Ah well that’s because they are on at Islington Mill, tonight.
2 Death to the Strange – Closer – Demo : number two on the bill on Friday, and if they are as good as they were last Saturday at Islington Mill (Mayfest) you are in for a treat. Expect harmonies, a funky rhythm section, and Mr Sewells’s aural adventures.
3 Tangerine Dream – Cloudburst Flight – Force Majeure : they are playing at the Lowry at Saturday. It is not cheap mind so I thought I would play a track to compensate those who cannot afford it. As requested by my favourite Glaswegian band “We Are Creosote”.
4 Class Actions – Risking Everything – from the website : expect polemic ridden lyrics with a strong message across a backdrop of electronica. Also playing the Cuts gig.
5 Well North of Watford – Number One – Demo Track : another tune from Little Hulton’s newest singer-songwriter.
6 The Black Lights – Alone – In the Dark : Jamie McCool has one has one of the most memorable voices on the local scene at the moment – check out the EP and listen. If these guys don’t break through to the big time there ain’t no justice in the world.
7 Irma Vep -The Feeling Has Gone – via Tony T : Welsh born, Manchester based musician/dancer Edwin Stevens records and performs his solo material under the pseudonym Irma Vep along with sometime collaborator Dylan ‘DBO’ Hughes who both play in the popular nu-reggae group Klaus Kinski. Not sure who is going to turn up at the Cuts gig but someone will be there no doubt.
8 First Offence – Government Decides – via Tony T : a blast from the past – it seemed appropriate to play this.
9 Gods Gift – Another Government Day – Exclusive Track : God’s Gift are back after a 27 year absence with a reworking of an old number by Stephen Murphy especially produced to support the cuts gig. We are currently working out a way to get this out there to all the fans.
10 Trojan Horse – Laces and Racists – Trojan Horse : topping the bill at the Cuts gig the rather splendid and incredibly hirsute prog-meisters from sunny Eccles. If you have not got their album by now shame on you! Here is a recent interview.
11 Well North of Watford – Burst Right Out – Demo Track : another track from the troubadour out of the lands beyond Walkden.
12 The Fall – Mod Mock Goth – (We Wish You) A Protein Christmas : touring again and due in Manchester soon for a gig – any excuse to play them and of course our very own Ding is on the bass guitar on this one.

Salford Music Scene – 15th March 2011

Almost the calm before the storm as we gather our strength for a busy period of gigging over the next few months. On tonights show:

  1. Neuron No – Saving the World – EP : The Planets recently split with Stephen Evans leaving to join Twisted Wheel. The core of the band relaunched themselves as eclectic trio “Neuron No” whose new EP is absolutely spiffing. They play our Mayfest show on May 21st, expect exemplary musicianship and great tunes from Chadwick, Bowes and Roscoe.
  2. God’s Gift – Anaesthetic – Pathology : the legendary God’s Gift were the other great band to come out of Prestwich in the 1970s and produced a stunning set of classic post punk tunes. From the marvellous retrospective on the Mezzthetics lable.
  3. Kin – Flickering – Flickering – a stunning album which deserves constant airplay – Kin has now started her new solo career in Holland – we wish her success!
  4. Pearl Divers – Afro Pop – Demo – they are back, after a short hiatus the master of funky indie are ready to perform live again with a new line-up and they will also be playing at the Mayfest event.
  5. Kit B – Everything Sounds Like Something Else – Demo – The Hidden Gem have split up but Paul and Danny from the band have started work on putting together a new line-up and Danny has been demoing a few songs which he has shared with me, and rather good they are to!
  6. Mandrake – If I Had All the Answers -Glory Days – a Manchester band but they record and rehearse at Blueprint so they are part of the local scene. Melodic rock with an indie edge…..the album is on its way to me.
  7. Ha Ha Said The Car – Storm Petal Suzie – Demo – another stunning track from the fertile imagination and talented fingers of Johann Kloos of the Sandells. Johann has sent me an album’s worth of material all of which is excellent and I shall be sharing that with you in future weeks.
  8. Kin – The Humming – Flickering – another track from the excellent album – have I mentioned it’s excellent yet?
  9. Neuron No – Spiders Last Moment – EP – as above
  10. Twinkle & Co – Meltdown – Demo – another couple of tunes from the pop-tastic duo …..
  11. Twinkle & Co – Temptation – Demo – as above
  12. Kit B – A Natural Ending – Demo – as above – the melodies on this are stunning!
  13. The Souls – Caught In A Whisper – an acoustic version recorded on Tony Thornborough’s show which i’ve done a bit of mixing on….Brad with an acoustic guitar….hopefully they are playing Mayfest as well if they can sort out a bass player.
  14. Pearl Divers – Super Heavy Black – the Divers at their funky best with Midi Maestro Cap’n Black operating several dozen devices at once……. and the new line up is Lingard, Montague, Black, Byrne and Carter…..
