The Last Salford Music Scene – 30th October 2012

On 22nd February last year (2011) I inherited Jon Coupe’s mantle of producing a Salford Music themed radio show – seemed sensible to me to have a radio show about Salford music on a community radio station in Salford….bit of a no-brainer really.

There had been a lot of debate at the station amongst a few of us about wanting to feature more Salford music on the programmes. Tony Thornborough, Becs Marshall, Ian Rothwell, Eddie Mann, Eddie Legge, Zac and Paul, Monty and SD were all doing their part in promoting new music in the city but it seemed to me we could go a bit further and increase the percentage of airplay given to local bands. I mean does anyone really want to hear the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays again and again when there are excellent bands like AAAK, Mr Heart, Suzuki Method, Lipsticks Traces, Positronik, Death to the Strange, Saturday Morning Cartoons et al who deserve airplay and more exposure?

So 88 episodes later it’s all coming to a close for a number of reasons far too complicated to waste your time on – all I will say is that one reason I am quitting  is I was becomingly increasingly frustrated at the inability to further increase the amount of music from local bands and singers on the station. So i’m off to do it somewhere else…..

So what am I going to be doing? Well this show and the Aural Delights show will be combined into a semi-regular podcast on Mixcloud. I have managed to keep a lot of my record company/promo company contacts despite me giving up broadcast radio…..and there will hopefully be more detail on this blog about the music than there has been hitherto. Also Jon, Tony and myself are bring back the Salford Music Website which you can now see here……

Thanks to all the bands that have contributed music over the last few years to make this show what is has been – extra special thanks to Ding, Tamsin, Toby Jughead, John Herring, The Inflictors (wherever you are!), Brad, Mr Moss, MJ Leigh, The Duttons, Dusty, Shaun, The General, Ken, Toska, Luis, Stephen, Martin B, Tim, Kin, the Borland boys and all the other bands Mr. Breen is in,  Hop Man Jr, Danny Short, Dave Bromwich, Andy & Michelle Quayle,  Mr Coupe  and the other three horsemen of radio apocalypse Tony, Monty and SD.

So for the final show…..new stuff and a bit of a self-indulgence with my favourite local bands – listen here……

  1. Sinister Chuckles – Bottle of Pop – another snippet of pop-punk loveliness from Sad Row studios and the legendary Shaun “Ali Bongo” Maxwell……in this outing he appears to have transmogrified into a thespian……
  2. Kill for Company – Mind Over Mouth – supporting both Twisted Wheel and Mr Heart in two seperate outings this coming Friday – a marvellous band which I am very pleased to have featured on the radio……
  3. Mr Heart – Stones …..from the exceptional new album “The Unspeakable Mr Heart” which is launched Friday Night at The Castle on Oldham Street……
  4. Kill Pretty – Mirror Factory ……. the best live band in the world…..from the new album “Dark Heart”” ……..catch them live you will not regret it
  5. Palomino – Price We Pay – a brand new band from Salford which is what this show is all about…….
  6. Rapid Pig – Flight – from the marvellous new album “Wildlife” …… another band which need to be seen
  7. The Blimp – Miniature – the other best live band in the world ….from the 3-4 EP which we released as a free download from SCR…….saw them last Friday and they were stunning….
  8. Alarms – Man With Gun – another new band – keeping in with the spirit of the show
  9. Journal Keepers – Clearest Day – one of the more recent discoveries and I have to say I’m glad they wrote in – bloomin’ brilliant….
  10. Kingdom Lost – Let’s Stay Together – from the new free EP “Naked from the Waist Down”
  11. West Coast Sick Line – This Ain’t London – not from Salford but we’ve adopted him – the mercurial songwriting talent of Dusty Moonan from his new album “I hope everybody gets nightmares except Kirsty”
  12. The Fall – Reformation – well I started with this back in 2009 so I may as well finish with it…….

So that’s your lot ……. thanks for listening….

Salford Music Scene – 6th March 2012

Another slice of the increasingly exciting music scen (sic) around the Salford and the North West…….

Starting with another cut from the great new EP from Warrington’s “Kindest of Thieves” – as reviewed elsewhere on this blog – moving swiftly on to an excellent band from Manchester called The Centrals. Next up the ever glorious Mr Heart –  one of the three bands playing at SCRs gig at the Kings Arms on Thursday night…..then a nice taster from the soon to be released album from John Herring (listening party for the album on Friday Night at the Kings again!).

Then the second band playing on Thursday – Kill for Company – utterly chuffed that they are featured in the NME website with a vid filmed by fellow SCR DJ Tony Thornborough, and then the excellent new single from the stunning Ninetails – and very good it is. Then the bill toppers for Thursday – Whipcord – it’s their 150th gig!  You’ll be sorry if you missed this august point in the bands history. Moston madness from the gorgeous English Mutts is followed by surf reggae genius from the always inventive Kit B.

Another John Herring track is followed by some rock from a great Manchester band – Beyond Recognition – and then a quick trip west up the M62 for a great Liverpool band called White Cliff.

Matters conclude with a track from the very excellent new album from Easter – “Innocence Man” – a stunning debut! – and a bit of Fall magic from 1980.

Music Diary #32 – 7th February 2012 and Salford Music Scene Radio Show

And since the last diary entry:

  1. The new Tim Berne album on ECM which is rather fine indeed – typical Berne performances however this time with a modicum of modal meandering which is perhaps more in keeping with his first leader role on the famous record lable.
  2. A couple of new tracks from the impressive Comet Sands  available here – tracks 1 and 2 are the new ones. And very fine they are as a well.
  3. The Christophers  are offering a free download of their new single “Wisdom” here – up to their usual standard I have to say. You can see them  live opening for Brooklyn based band The Static Jacks at `the Manchester Roadhouse on February 26th (sunday) from 7pm. For more info visit www.thechristophersmusic.co.uk
  4. Enjoying the Paper Tiger Illuminated EP on Mind on Fire – fascinating mix of styles.
  5. Impressed with the sound of Naked Veins from Swinton – just waiting for some tracks from the band.
  6. As reviewed elsewhere on the blog the new EP from The Kindest of Thieves is rather yummy.

Vis a vis this weeks Salford Music Scene show – the mix is as follows….and you can hear it here……

Salford Music Scene – 18th October 2011

So,well and here we are again……a trundle through the music scene around and about the Salford and Greater Manchester area……

On this show……

  • The Happy Fallen – Sold Gaze – Neal James continues to supply us with a raft of great tunes – this finds him on a motorik tip…..
  • The Vanity Project – Structure of An Atom – a three piece from East Lancs who started earlier this year. Haunting and memorable acoustic music which makes a welcome change from the music purported to be nu-folk.
  • Danny Short – Your Kingdom – Another track from our free download “Every Now & Then”  which you can get here. Here Dan demonstrates his skill with melody on a beautiful song with one of those choruses that sticks in your head.
  • The Loaded Dice – Hollow Man – from the new album “Hindsight of a brand new soul – Halo of Fire Flies” which is out on November 5th. Based in Manchester but originally from Dolgellau. Powerful and melodic, energetic and careful not to adopt the usual rock tropes, this band have produced five albums to date and have another in the pipeline.
  • Shoshin – City of Patience – the title track from an album which has had pretty extensive play on this show  – a band you need to catch soon as they are very good indeed.
  • The Vanity Project – We Will Rise
  • Kill for Company – Mind Over Mouth – another track from the very productive and dynamic duo……the fifth track on the “Money Now EP” – lots more of there stuff here
  • Veladrome – Violent Deer – new track from Tom and Lisa which is rather fine indeed, atmospheric and ambient and building into something rather marvellous – catch them at Alter Ego in Manc this Saturday (22nd October).
  • Danny Short – Unknown, Alone
  • Well North of Watford – Make Sense of Loneliness – as featured previously in acoustic version this artist from Little Hulton has been in studio ….
  • The Loaded Dice – Maniac
  • Martin Bramah – When Sleep Won’t Come – Martin did a solo session for me last year as part of the Reformation show and I thought i’d have a listen to it again and I liked it so much I thought I would play a track from it again – this song is also on the “Enter Castle Perilous” album of which…..
  • Factory Star – Fall of GB – there will be some discussions about album of the year amongst the SCR DJ Alliance about album of the year but I think this one will be getting a fair few votes as the front runner. A christmas single “Lucybel” will be out soon
  • The Fall – Rebellious Jukebox – a classic from the first Fall album completing a trio of Bramah related tunes to conclude the show…..
