Lipstick Traces

Cirque De La Mort

30th April 2013

The debut EP from the rather marvellous Lipstick Traces contains  four blistering tunes of such magnificence that the old shiver up the spine is there when listening to them.

Having featured the band on the now defunct radio show and on subsequent blogs, and written of them in glowing terms in the Zeen I am pleased to continue my admiration unreservedly in respect of their work after listening to this release.

Front man Tony Daniels is in excellent form here with vocal performances which defy description – the variety of tone on the closing “Escape from NY” is sensational. He moves from Johnny Cash baritone,  through the louche blues extremes of a Jagger, to the howling rage of a Cobain with the band shifting from americana, via piano balladry to garage rock with effortless precision. Keyboardist Jason Taylor comes into his own on this track offering a glorious sound palette for the rest of the band to deliver over.

Lipstck Traces

The EP  title track is a riff driven blues with Adam Mortimer excelling on guitar – beautifully understated solo – and Mark Williams with Daniel Bevan offering a uber-tight four to the floor rhythm. “Broken Lung” beats the hell out of anything i’ve heard recently with it’s relentless blues riffage and the memorable “The Chase” is up there with a few choice tunes as song of the year with Daniels fractured vocals full of emotion delivering over a great riff.

I took the chance to ask Tony and Adam a few questions around this release…..

What are the bands musical influences?
Tony: The band has a wide range of influences, which is probably the reason our music transfers so well to a variety of musical genres. I am a huge fan of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones; I love the energy frontmen like Bowie and Jagger bring to their performances whilst I also love the Manic Street Preachers and for a while they played a big part in the style of music we created.Adam: I guess my big three would be Jack White, Jimmy Page and John Frusciante, some part of them transfers into my work at some point, with Lipstick Traces I try to emulate the intensity of Jack White’s playing, since I first saw The White Stripes I’ve always strived to match the insane noise that they created with such a minimal amount of equipment.

Have any of the band members been in other bands/currently doing other projects?

Tony: Over the past four years I’ve always been doing some kind of project with at least one member of Lipstick Traces, first year of University I was in a band called ‘Pet Project’ with Dan and Mark, then ‘The Universal’ with Adam and in other bands in college with Jay. I also write a lot of other material I have been working on; I’ll be releasing that under my old alias of TurbanTurbanDave.

Adam: I’ve been in various bands over the years but I got into Lipstick when I was in another band with Tony, he wanted someone else to bring a different dimension so I thought I’d give it a go and I’ve enjoyed being in a band with such close friends. As well as Lipstick I also play guitar/synth in Rachel Waters’ band and in Moscow Transport, all made up of friends from the same degree, I like to keep creative so I don’t go stale.

Where was the EP recorded?

Adelphi Basement Studios at Salford University, the majority of us are music students at the university so we thought it would be a waste not to use the resources to create an EP whilst we were there. ‘The Chase’ and ‘Broken Lung’ were both live recordings so we just played until we got the right take, ‘Cirque De La Mort’ and ‘Escape from NY’ were overdub recordings with the bass and drums recorded together to help capture that live intensity.

Any gigs/tour planned (other than the launch)

We’re still looking into it at the moment; we’re hoping to go down to London and do a few gigs and we’re currently talking to some promoters, there is also talk of going to Germany to do a few gigs and to have a nice holiday. As for local gigs we’ll be looking for a gig in Manchester in May, we don’t want to overload people with gigs.

Famous Last Words – a great song – why didn’t it make it onto the EP?

Tony: It’s going to be a bonus track on the physical copy of the EP, which we will be giving away for free at our launch night, we never really know how to play the song live so it’s taken a back seat to the rest of the songs.

Adam: It was always an audacious track once we took it off stage and brought it into the studio and as a band we’ve found it hard to really do it justice more than anything, it’s a lovely song about a sad topic and it carries a lot of emotional weight so I guess we’d be doing it an injustice if we gave it anything less than 100% from both a compositional and performance perspective.

The band are launching the EP at Retro Bar in Manchester on April 23rd – £3 entrance with a free copy of the EP. Rachel Waters and the Novasons will also be playing.

EP of the year so far for me.

Notes in respect of the above:

1. Sharp, intelligent and attractive alternative rock from the Manchester area – currently recording new material so here is something to remind you pending the new stuff.

2.  Another glorious tune from the pen of Mr Danny Cusick – we await their first live appearance with some anticipation.

3. They launch this new EP on Wednesday 9th May at the Kings Arms. Also the debut gig for new drummer Aaron. Check our their previous work “Last Fall” and “Idealistic Future”. Recorded by the ever popular Mr Archer at 6dB studios. Vidchip below done by that highly talented Kin person (more of which later)……listen to the words, almost Orwellian!

4/14. Catch them at The Castle on Oldham Street, Manchester (highly recommended intimate venue with excellent beer) on May 14th.  Get their material from Bandcamp. Probably the leading instrumental experimental psych/drone band in the conurbation at the moment. This album was released in March. Hypnotic stuff.

5. I was brought up on metal at an early age (Zepp, The Sabs, Purple) so it I have always retained a love for the better ends of the genre. This lot describe themselves as post-hardcore/metalcore and they immediately struck me as refreshing and far better than some of the material that I get sent. Formed in 2011 they are still new to the scene and have just recorded this debut EP titled ‘Prepare For The Fight’. Set to be released mid 2012 it includes the tracks ‘Regrets’ (feat. Sam Graves of With One Last Breath) and this is the first single ‘Headstrong’ (now streaming on the music page). You can catch them live on 4th June – The Flying Horse, Rochdale, 28th June – The Star and Garter with POLAR and in between those dates they are  playing with You Cried Wolf in York on the 23rd if you fancy a trip over to that fine city.

6. More metal – this time from the other end of the M62(W) via Southport , Wales and the States – again a refreshing sound with an absence of the usual cliches. They used to be called “Trollbangers” – interesting!  Anyway, an impressive debut album which you can acquire here. More information on their website.

7. New single which was sent to me by the knowledgeable and reudite Mr Lynham of Superstar Destroyer. More Merseysiders,  this time with a fascinating guitar driven  sound – preorder the single here….released on May 21st. This lot blew me away with their Ghost Ride The Whip EP last October which is still available as a free download  it says there that the CD is sold out but Nick Duke from Trojan Horse has a couple of copies if you ask him nicely.

8. Solo project from Positronik’s MzDee – glorious stuff here from Danielle really demonstrating what an excellent voice she possesses. You will be able to catch her and the rest of Positronik at the Salford Music Festival in October – and hopefully sooner than that.

9. The aforementioned Kin with the new iteration of the Kin Band from a Dutch Radio Session – glorious version of the tune from Dot Dot Dot/Flickering.

10.  Another track from this new band from sunny Salford.

11. Formed in 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Jake Maxwell (drummer of the Drowning Sorrows and Former Pink Hearse guitarist). Look out for their live debut later in 2012 and  you can get this debut release free from Bandcamp….not that we are into nepotism or anything at SCR but he just happens to be the son of Shaun Maxwell of Taser Puppets and Sinister Chuckles.

12. They will be on at the aforementioned gig with Dead Sea Apes at the Castle on May 14th – check out their available recordings on Bandcamp – a gloriously noisy lot…most enjoyable.

13. Manchester band – lots more info on their website – not sure what the capital N at the end of the word is about…..

15. The B-Side of the latest single recorded in Brighton at the end of last year.

Salford Music Scene – 25th April 2012

The significance and sometimes downside of pre-recording radio shows is that things change in between you recording them and them being aired. So that Everyday Goldfish who are listed below are not now playing the Grunge Revival at The Crescent – however Cable 35 who I have featured on the Aural Delights Show are instead. So the show comprises (and can be listened to here):

1 The Words Head Over Heels Single
2 Dead Circus Paranoia Demo
3 Well Wisher Breathe In Summer Gangs
4 Everyday Goldfish Second Thoughts Demo
5 Kurb Get On Your Knees and Pray Demo
6 The Ascension The Rift Blood Upon The Rose
7 Lipstick Traces D Minor Demo
8 English Mutts Proud Man Demo
9 Positronik Don’t Come Crying Single
10 Our Day Remains Take This Night Single
11 Saturday Morning Cartoons The Ditch Single (Radio Edit)
12 The Black Paths Wake Up Hold Fast To That Which Is Good
13 Trojan Horse Fire Fire EP
14 Dead Sea Apes Astral House Astral House
15 The Fall Cosmos 7 Ersazt GB

Notes in respect of the above artistes

1. The new single…..a fine follow up to the excellent “Demons”

2.  One of the bands appearing at the Grunge Revival at the TNT Experience at The Crescent Salford on Friday – they are from Manchester

3. From the recent EP “Summer Gangs” – skittish math rock lunacy – featuring Mr Ian Breen who is nearly in as many bands as Hop Man Jr (nearly but not quite)

4. This lot were supposed to be playing at the Grunge thing at the Crescent on Friday but got pulled after I had recorded the show Instead of these on Friday at the Crescent you get these (who I have featured before):

5. From Macclesfield – they need a bass player and a drummer if anyone is interested (serious shortage of drummers around at the moment for some reason…..). Hopefully they will send me some more tracks as I rather like them.

6. Here’s a track from the new EP which is launched at the Kings Arms on May 9th (Kin made the video……very good…)

7.  Another new band from Salford (new to me anyway) describe themselves as “dirty blues” – more from them in future weeks.

8.  Another pop classic from the lovely Mutts from Moston……reminded me a bit of quality era Hall and Oates this – but without the nonsensical ululating of Mr Hall.

9. Inevitably biased towards this lot as they are all my chums but I have to say this is a bit of a pop classic from Jeff, Danielle and John. They will be gigging soon I hope, after a bit of a rest over the last few months.

10. New single from this young combo from Bolton.

11. The other band playing at the grunge gig on Friday – from Little Hulton (an area steeped in musical heritage) – very impressed by these lads although I had to edit out the naughty word.

12. From next door in Walkden Mr Von Black Paths sooths us with his electronic wizardry….a track from a forthcoming album which he is going to let us have in bits – the little tease.

13. The iconoclastic marriage of Frank Zappa, Black Flag and Yes encapsulated in a small bite sized chunk – from the forthcoming EP of the same name which will be launched on May 3rd at the Kings Arms as part of New Music Series (more of this on next weeks show).

14. Stunning track from a recent EP of the same name – marvellous ambient psychedelia….the companion CD “Lupus” is similarly wonderful…

15 From the last but one single – the new single arrived too late for me to feature it on this weeks show – so you will get it next week
