Fascinating Things : Issue 58

For those of us born in the latter half of the last century, and growing up in the mad musical world of the 70s and 80s it is chastening that a lot of our musical heroes are moving on to the great gig in the sky in 2016. There have been many tributes over the last month or so, and I suppose I should get use to this happening. One such tribute is from the mighty Periscope, who has been somewhat quiet of late, who has worked with Monica Ward to release a cover of Bowie and Eno’s “Heroes”. It has the usual excellent Periscope wall of sound treatment and they do make a good job of honoring Bowie’s passing and legacy.

Following the very recent arrival of their ‘Questions’, single Southampton’s (UK) Circle Of Reason are now back with their latest video single titled ‘Colours’. Showcasing another metallic and emotive rock track, ‘Colours’ is an epic anthem taken from the bands forthcoming album “Faith Or Theory”.

Manon Meurt, one of the foremost shoegaze groups from Eastern Europe, who have played alongside The Raveonettes, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, LSD and the Search for God, and My Bloody Valentine,  report that  their debut EP will be issued on white vinyl in May thanks to Canada’s Label Obscura. Here’s a taster.

The Battles Of Winter release new single and video ‘Love’s White Thread’ on Ruby Music on 27th May. ‘Love’s White Thread’ is the first release from the forthcoming album “At Once With Tattered Sails”. A great bass line on this and great layers of vocals and guitar.

Russia’s Sounds of Sputnik is releasing their single ‘Light Scheme (Fran Ashcroft Remix)’ from their debut LP ‘New Born’ feat. Ummagma, which also gets a re-release in early May through hallmark U.S. shoegaze label Moon Sounds Records. UK producer Fran Ashcroft, widely known for his work in the psych rock scene, has also worked with Damon Albarn (Blur) and Lords of Acid. The single comes with a new video, produced and directed by Latvia/UK experimental filmmaker Dariy Karyakin and featuring actors Nadine Andreeva and Egon Skakun.

Brighton’s (UK) post-punk fuelled alternative rock outfit Come The Spring release their official video for their latest single ’24’. Featuring live footage of the band showcasing their renowned high energy performances, 24 is taken from their REVIVE EP available through UK independent label Engineer Records. Having formed in late 2012 from the ashes of cult-following UK rock bands, Come The Spring members bring their vast experience and creativity to produce emotionally charged and anthemic songs. Consisting of Sam Craddock (Vox), David Gamage (Guitar), Simon Goodrick (Guitar), Mark Wilkinson (Bass) and Jamie Donbroski (Drums), the allies of uncompromised guitar driven rock have previously shared stages with the likes of Green Day, No FX, Texas Is The Reason, Braid and many more.

On the trail of their recent single ‘It Was Nothing’, Canadian synthwave duo Meter Bridge have announced they will be releasing their latest EP “Filter / Kite” through WEATNU Records. It includes three tracks – Filter’, ‘Kite’ and a Mind Veneration Remix by Mark LaFountain. Sound wise ‘Filter’ is very reminiscent of Severed Heads which got my attention straight away.

Check out Johann Kloos’s new one “Behind The Net Curtain”, which includes his usual eclectic mix of material and is as always well worthy of your attention.

Some news snippets:

  • Dylan Carlson is to officially self-release “Falling With A Thousand Stars and other Wonders From The House Of Albion” on 25th June. It is a solo album which is described as ” …..droning 6 and 12-string guitars, reinterpreting traditional old English and Scottish folk ballads into sombre instrumental pieces”.
  • Chester-based alt-electronic act, The Ladder  release their new single, “Down” on May 30th  via York label, Anonymous Records. The Ladder are production duo Addz Vindicare [vocals, bass, production] and Danny Ryder [synths, vocals] – ‘Down’ as a track moves The Ladder beyond the trappings of pure industrial-EBM, and incorporates elements of shoegaze.
  • Southern Lord has confirmed the impending release of Total Destruction (1999-2006) the collected discography of now defunct thrash rockers, Asschapel.
  • Zublue are a high energy three piece Garage Rock band from Essex, UK. Influenced by the likes of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Sonic Youth, the band’s debut EP ‘Change the Channel’ is an angst-ridden examination of a modern world controlled by the media. Well worth a listen say I.

Rivers and Pharoahs

Aural Delights favourite, Periscope, is back with a new release “Rivers and Pharoahs”. Available in all major stores from 7th  August 2015, with additional vocals from Leon Flux,  it’s a bit of a departure from the usual Periscope sound……most enjoyable.

Periscope (Martin Swinny) has come full circle as an artist since his days fronting The Hungry Socks, the Manchester band he formed which ended up cult-like in their status not to mention boasting the line up of Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets) , Mani (The Stone Roses, Primal Scream) , Chris Goodwin (Electronic, The Buzzcocks) and Andy Housley (The Cradle) . The Hungry Socks split with each member going on to their respective bands, Martin went on to play in a couple more bands before making the move to record under the name Periscope, a solo artist in every sense of the word, producing video as well as sound, stretching his own influences… the results so far have been outstanding.  His solo career as a freelance independent songwriter and audio/video conceptualist in the age of H.D. has earned him a reputation as a quality studio producer beyond the UK post-punk music scene & garnered the attention of industry pros for his evolving ingenuitive aesthetic & midi harmonics compounded by an ability to wield expressively transcendent lyrics.

Are you listening?

Aural Delights regular, Manchester artist Periscope is set to release his fourth single “Listen” on Zozak Records/Geometria.

“Listen” will be released worldwide and will be available from all major stores. Featuring Alyona on vocals, with additonal guitar work from The Happy Fallen’s Neale James it is up there with the best of Periscope’s releases.

LISTEN FLYER 2

Having previously topped a major Russian chart with the single release “Thumbsucker ” the anthemic “Listen” (out on 6th April 2015) looks set to do the same.

The single comes with a stunning melancholic b-side “In My Tiny Day”.

Stick Your Head Out Of The Window And Yell

Never known to disappoint the ever excellent Periscope is back with a stunning new track “Point Blank” sampling Peter Finch from  Paddy Chayefsky’s “Network” – one of his best yet and chillingly accurate about the current state of the nation…..

The single is  available from  8th November 2014 from all good stores – Zozak Records/ Rubin TV – PZR256.

The Turning Point

It is always with a degree of expectation that I wait for the latest offering from Periscope. This time around he has delved into spoken word,  collaborating with Gerry Potter, to create something rather magical.  Peri says “A little bit of a departure for me in genre terms ,  a one off collabration with the brilliant Merseyside poet Gerry Potter, there are no plans for any kind of release as yet.” The usual Manc Indie wall of sound has been replaced by a gentle urban/ambient feel with a ear-worm melodic line. Fine stuff indeed. Potter who is an actor and director, as well as being a poet, has an excellent way with words – the full text is reproduced on the You Tube page.

Most enjoyable

Salford Music Scene – 31st July 2012

This weeks outing concentrates on two events happening in Manchester and Salford over the forthcoming weekend.

Music Under The Tree Festival is a 2 day/evening Charity Event Founded By The Outreach Project (A local Manchester Band) in May 2012.

The First Ever Music Under The Tree Festival takes place on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th August.

The Outreach Project,  wanted to use their music to get involved in a charity called ‘School Under The Tree’ based in Awasa, Ethiopia. (Registered Charity Number: 1146128) – more details here.

So after a brainstorm, the lads decided to hold a 2 day/evening festival in Manchester City Centre, and went in search of a venue.  All proceeds from ticket sales and any other fundraising would go to School Under The Tree.

The Outreach Project came across a suitable venue  TV21, in the Northern Quarter on Thomas Street in Central Manchester , so they organised a meeting with the owner of the venue Adrienne Bennet and got the go ahead to put on the Festival.

The band told their school (St. Bede’s College) about the festival and ideas they had, and the headmaster of the School donated resources  for the hire of the pa system.

On this show and on tomorrow nights Aural Delights Show I will be playing music from some of the bands involved……

On Sunday at the Kings Arms we have Salford Salutes Don Macintyre.  Don who sadly died of cancer recently was well known in the Salford and Manchester area as being a first class musician, and what better way to celebrate his life than an afternoon of live music at The Kings Arms, Bloom Street, Salford on Sunday 5th August.

Organiser Tony Flynn says “Since Don passed away it seemed only natural to hold an afternoon of music in his honour and raise money for charity.  I’m glad to say that many, many musicians have asked to play at this gig. Acts include solo artiste, Tony Ridings, a familiar face at Salford Salutes Dylan events, Ian Bent, the singing bricklayer,  John “Boob Boom” McFadden, all the way from Moston, The Big Chickens aka Scott and John, from Salford and Warrington, The Midnight Sun, straight outta Moston, The Threat, knocking ’em dead in Salford, The Inflictors, one of Salford’s finest blues bands, Rockin’ Train! and one band that I am longing to see the multi talented, multi lingual, Bexley Square Blues Band!”

All this for a measly £5!   From 2pm to 7pm.
