Music Diary #6 – 6th January

Hells teeth – it never rains but it pours etc…..

  • News of a 7CD box set of Peter Hammill live performances – pre-ordered! More info here
  • The debut album by the rather lovely Limbs. It’s called “Olympics” and features a lot of the numbers from the band I have previously played. An interesting departure for Mike Chadwick from Neuron No who mainly focuses on his piano playing with a series of remarkable tunes in a somewhat otherworldly and quirky style. A more fulsome review to follow in due course. Get it here.
  • Forest Fire – Staring at the X – this came out in October last year but i’ve only just got round to it – rather gorgeous indeed with a strong Kraut-disco-punk feel in a VU stylee.
  • Southern Lord will be releasing CD versions of several Poison Idea reissues that TKO Records are currently re-releasing on vinyl. All of the material is being re-mastered by Jack Control (World Burns to Death) and each release includes new, extensive liner notes as well as never before seen photos and previously unreleased bonus material. This Poison Idea reissue series kicks off January 30th, with the re-release of Darby Crash Rides Again: The Early Years. Boasting twenty-nine tracks from the band’s earliest days, the album includes the 100% previously unreleased Boner’s Kitchen demo from 1981, the complete Darby Crash Rides Again demo from 1982, the complete uncut live-on-the-air set from the 1983 KBOO radio benefit, and outtakes from the Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes recording session. Much of this material has either been out-of-print or never before officially released! All the recordings have been meticulously restored and mastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door Mastering. The booklet contains liner notes, old flyers and tons of previously unpublished photos from the band’s beginnings. This is a complete no-brainer for Poison Idea fans or any fan of the early days of American hardcore punk. Following Darby Crash Rides Again in January, Southern Lord will also re-release The Fatal Erection Years (Pick Your King/Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes), War All The Time, Ian Mackaye, Feel The Darkness, We Must Burn and Last Will & Testament throughout 2012.

Aural Delights Radio Show – 21st December 2011 – Albums of the Year Part 3

The third of four shows dedicated to my albums of the year as selected by myself, fellow Salford City Radio DJs and a group of ne’er-do-wells from a Fall forum somewhere in etherspace

Deerhunter – Wash Off  – Rhapsody Original (June) – recorded live in Austin at the annual Rhapsody Rocks SXSW party. A memorable opening track from a damn fine album.

Moon Duo – Run Around – Mazes (March) – The Wooden Shjips Ripley Johnson and organist Sanae Yamada in full psyche drone mode for their second album. Also remixed.

Magazine – Do The Meaning – No Thyself (October) – I wasn’t too sure on this one myself but the weight of opinion amongst the chums was that it was a return to form. I was a little perplexed with some of the lyrics and I thought their was an element of self parody in parts.

Dr Tequila – Dr Tequila – Dr Tequila (September) – Blues soaked latino dance craziness from Ritchie Barron and his coterie of experienced Californian musicians who create great party music.

Across Tundras – In the Name of the Rio Grande – Sage (May) – Southern Gothic metal americana with a smattering of country. Real in your face music with an attitude.

White Fence – And By Always – In Growing Faith (January) – trippy, distortion-laced, psychedelic pop from Tim Presley who seems to be making this his main project following the demise of Darker My Love, apart from occasional paternity leave cover for The Fall.

The Suzukis – Built In – The Suzukis (July) – marvellous first outing from this band from Wigan – big things are predicted and it is justified.

Van Der Graaf Generator – Highly Strung – A Grounding In Numbers (March) – the 12th studio album by my reckoning and a real return to form after the disappointment of Trisector. Also remarkably short songs for this band but still with their trademark punk-prog approach.

Peter Hammill – Central Hotel – PNO, GTR, VOX (October) – PJAH hard at work, on his own, over two discs live at various venues throughout the land – including sunny Salford (I was present at said event). Disc One is Peter with piano, Disc Two is Peter with Guitar. An amazing version of the closing track from the 1981 album Sitting Targets.

Day For Airstrikes – Get In My Car – Adam, Wez, Ian, John, Danny, Rita, Sue and Bob Too (May) – the new soundtrack to the film of the latter part of the album title which was performed only once at the Sounds from the Other City Festival in May. The lovely mop-tops from South Manchester get into an altogether more reflective mood.

Aural Delights Radio Show 12th October

On this show….

Peter Hammill – Shingle Song – PNO GTR VOX – from a brand new double album on Fie featuring solo performances from 2010 including a gig at the Lowry Theatre which I was fortunate enough to attend – a classic piece of Hammill song-writing originally from the 1975 album “Nadir’s Big Chance”.

We Were Promised Jetpacks – Building Buildings – Medicine – the b-side of the recent single, whiich I actually prefer to the a-side. The new album “In the pit of the stomach” is impressive and I’ll be featuring it in future weeks.

The Computers – Surfin’ Bird – Rhythm Revue – another one where I prefer the b-side to the a-side – not sure about this band in general  but I do like their take on the classic “Surfin’ Bird” – originally by The Trashmen and then covered by The Ramones.

Half Man Half Biscuit – Tommy Walsh’s Eco House – 90 Bisodol (Crimond) – an album which gets better with every listen, my initial concerns about it have now disappeared, here we have Blackwell in full rant mode with the usual cultural targets getting the full force of his extremely acidic and very witty tongue.

Silent Cities – Gone Fishin’ – Dream – as featured last week, an impressive singer songwriter from Liverpool called Simon Maddison.

Audio Asylum – Pressure – Demo – another impressive Liverpool band i’ve featured before.

Down the Machine – Know Your Place – Single – north east band – they have a website with lots of info – latest vid-chip below….

Ides of Gemini – Matyrdom of the Hippolyte – The Disruption Writ – they have just signed to Neurot and will have an album out Spring 2012. This is a great track from their self released EP proving that you can do special things with this musical form.

Pale Man Made – Started in 1966 – another North East band don’t know much about them I’m afraid…..this was released on Monday on Tiny Lights Recordings

West Coast Sick Line – This Ain’t London – from Glasgow and the fertile mind of Dusty Moonan.

Tone Puppets – Ignore – it says “Full of eastern promise – and northern grit, resident band at The Lovely Job, Tone Puppets produce a fizzy, guitar fuelled indie laced sound with curious time signatures and mathy prog-outs that’s been likened to the Beta Band/Nirvana and The Doors.” Indeed.

Peter Hammill – Vision – PNO GTR VOX – another one from the great man – this was originally from his first solo album “Fools Mate” from 1971.

Van Der Graaf Generator – Scorched Earth – and to close the band that Hammill formed with a stunning track from the come-back album “Godbluff”…..
