Music Diary #37 – Aural Delights Radio Show – 15th February 2012

And here we are again with another Wednesday of music…..in through the ethergate in the last 24 hours music from

  • Manna – sort of a sultry version of PJ Harvey, on one of the tracks she sings with Mark Laneghan – interesting stuff and bears repeated listening
  • Pint Shot Riot –   new single “Starting to Fly” not bad but very much of its ilk – once it gets going ’tis quite impressive in some areas.
  • Torche – single off of the new album -which is on its way to me – noisy, loud guitars etc – v.good!
  • The Imogen Styles – fascinating art pop duo with a strong image and a DIY approach to music/vids. Something quite captivating about what they do….but I doubt if I would play it….there you go
  • Paul Weller – single called “That Dangerous Age” sounding somewhat like Ray Davies in parts – alright I suppose if you like that sort of thing….
  • The Finest Hour – good stuff – new single called Janey/Feel The Same

And on this weeks show a variety of newer things with a prog classic of the week, Moff moment and Farley Kiwi fumble…most of the bands are on Facebook and you can look them up there……listen here….

Aural Delights Radio Show – 21st September 2011

A mixed bag of tunes on this show – pretty eclectic actually – here we go again:

  • Steamkings – L1 125 – Sleepy Music Compilation – impressive band from the excellent Sleepy Music label from Brighton
  • Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes – Hearts of Stone -Hearts of Stone – whilst there are no horns (which has horns) on this the preceding track made me think of Southside and drag out this track from the archives.
  • Richie Barron – Tahoe Boogie – Rather Have The Green Than The Blues – otherwise known as Dr Tequila,  from one of Richie’s earlier albums which he kindly shipped over some copies of from the States last week. This definately has horns!!
  • Thin White Rope – Disney Girl – Exploring the Axis – an excellent track from the first album from this great band which split in 1992. Like Steely Dan they take their name from a Bill Burroughs literary reference.
  • Blue Orchids – Disney Boys – The Flood Single – seemed somewhat sensible to follow the preceding tune with this one….
  • Half Man Half Biscuit – Arthurs Farm – ACD – having just ordered the new album, which is out on 26th September (90 Bisodol(Crimond)) , I had a compulsion to listen to this one. It’s Tommy Walsh’s Eco House by the way not Tommy Boyd as I say on the show, that’s a totally different cultural reference.
  • Sugar – If I can’t change your mind – Besides – “Copper Blue” remains to this day  one of my favourite albums – this acoustic version of a tune from the album featured on a CD Single and then turned up on the Besides compilation album.
  • Wild Swans – Chloroform – The Coldest Winter for A Hundred Years – another glorious track from one the albums of the year for me.
  • Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Cinnamon Girl – Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere – a classic album, a classic band and a classic tune. Nuff said.
  • Late Night Shopping – Late Night Shopping – Sleepy Music Compilation – have been playing this band for the last few weeks – very impressed with their off kilter look at the universe.
  • Heinous Tarts – Real Life Failer – Compilation CD provided by Chris Goodhead – a five piece from York who are reforming for a one off gig at Fibbers on 30th September – all for charity – sign up with them on Facebook for lots more information.
  • Ana Ege – Driving with no hands – Bad Blood – from the stunning new Steve Earle produced album – if you have not heard Ana before do yourself a favour and grab this album.
  • The Explorers Collective – Please Please Yourself – Single – As it says on the press release “Incendiary debut single “The Factory” gained great radio support including:The British Breakfast in Richmond Virginia USA, Spark FM 6-6 playlist & interview, Salford City Radio (that would be me!) BBC Introducing Three Counties play and Interview,  BBC Introducing Cambridge Interview and Live Session. Four permanent members The Explorer, Frazer Davidson, Mookherjee and Mr P. Paganotto + special guest poets, animators, rappers and musicians, make it their mission to combine killer hooks & wry observational wit with cutting-edge animation and leftfield imagination.” Marvellous stuff!
  • Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. – Pink Lady Lemonade Part 04 – Pink Lady Lemonade You’re From Inner Space – i’ve been wanting to play something by these extremely hirsute purveyors of Japanese psychedelia for some time and what better way to start than their probably most recorded epic and this is from their most recent release as The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. – being the fourth part of a set of versions of the tune on the CD/Vinyl release.

Good time psychedelic rock with punk sensibilities. 2. a state of personal music zen. example: By the time the 3rd song started, I was totally taost……more info here ….. also Marky Ramone guest drums on this track!

6. Jackson’s Warehouse – Ska Face – Getting Away With It – Jacksons Warehouse formed in 2004. Having worked hard to get a record deal they released ‘Hotel by the Sea’ with SX Records. The single, and its b-sides, received great reviews and an unexpected amount of radio play on XFM, Radio 6 and receiving ‘Track of the week’ status on many student radio’s culminating in a successful tour of Scotland and the North of England as well expanding an ever growing fan base around Essex and London……more stuff here

7. Your Last Drive – Decoys – Simple Solutions Made Complex – Apologies – a lot of factual errors on this show – I say they are from Wigan when they are from Lancaster…….they say of themselves “Your Last Drive and we consist of Luke, Callum, Paul, Joey and the new addition Nathan. We’re based in Lancaster, Lancashire. We have been active for roughly 6 months and are quickly progressing and spreading from our home town, with fans in many areas of the country and a few outside of it. It’s definitely safe to say that our music is from the heart. We don’t make what people want to hear, we make what we like as music, in our opinion, should be. We take a lot of influence from both Hardcore/Post-Hardcore bands such as Alexisonfire, We Are The Ocean and Yashin as well as bands from the original emo scene like Halifax and Hawthorne Heights. We are an extremely hard working band and are always pushing ourselves to breaking point in terms of blowing away the crowd at live performances and securing new opportunities for ourselves as a band. At the rate we are progressing you should look out for us hitting a music scene near you very soon, we have a lot of exciting opportunities in the pipeline and can’t wait to get out there this year!” You can get the EP here for nowt.

8. The Stevenson Ranch Davidians – Nature Boy – Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs – comprehensive website here

9. Glyn Bailey & The Many Splendored Things – The Old Illawallah – The Disturbance – this came into me at the station and I was impressed by the sound – more details here

10. The Jar Family – The Poolie Strut – The Livingston Session – collective of singer songwriters from the North East who have decamped down south – many apologies again …. for calling them the Jar Band on the show – it’s my age you see, I tend to forget things easily and get them muddled up….more info here … and you can get this song as a free download here….The new EP, ‘The Livingston Session’ was recorded in the summer of 2010 and is now available to download via the music section on the site….and very good it is too..

11. The Love Load –  The Human Resourceful – The Human Resourceful – “Dischord veteran, ALKEM creator, and drummer extraordinaire Ben Azzara picks up his sticks and hits the skins behind singer/songwriter Ted Watts, and aided by musical and technical prodigy, Blaine Misner, created the impulse debut album by The Love Load entitled The Human Resourceful. While the band and record are new, the players are neither new to the game or each other. Watts and Azzara have composed the rhythm section of D.C. based Pup Tent for most of the last five years. Both Azzara and Watts have extensive resumes.” – website here

12. The Explorers Collective – The Factory – Single – impressive new band with a great sound which reminds me of bands like Atomic Rooster – info here

13. Water Signs – Toka Toka – don’t know too much about these other than they have three great EPs on Bandcamp – info here and bandcamp here – they play Kraak gallery on April 28th…..
