Salford Music Scene – 17th May 2011

On this show you will find:

1 Joy Division – Atmosphere – The Best of Joy Division : bit of a theme on tonights show and three versions of this very song – thought I would do a bit of compare and contrast to see how the tune(age) differs with passing of the years.

2 Peter Hook and The Light  with Rowetta – Atmosphere – 11022011 : and thus here is the most up to date version of said classic – and you can catch Monty interviewing Mr Hook and Rowetta in his show on this occasion. See how good we are to you at Salford City Radio?

3 Neuron No – Saving the World – EP : more musical munificence from the titantic trio. Catch them at Mayfest on Saturday!

4 Death to the Strange – Drink and the Devil – Single : These guys beat the bejazus out of most of the so-called nu-folk wannabees you get on R6 and other such stations – they harmonise to perfection and they have the wonderful aural ambience of Mr Sewell floating in the ether behind them as well. Topping the bill at Mayfest and doing a charity gig on the same day.

5 Phil Davies and the Ninja Smoke Bombs  – Enid Blyton – Regulation Specification : significantly excellent lyrics with a melodic musical backbone and a very pleasant singing voice. Expect excellence and it will be exceeded. Also on the bill at Mayfest (did I mention it’s only a fiver?)

6 Rawcuss – John Travolta – Single : A “Radio Stars” for the 21st Century – possibly? Brash and not the least bit bashful. They are in the second round of a Supajam competition to play at Benicassim so give them your votes! Vote here……

7 Belle Vue  – With Glue – Belle Vue : as reviewed elsewhere in this blog -hyperintelligent math pop with a melodic angle and some great musicianship.

8 The Overeasies – Lock the Door – Reverbnation Track : rapidly growing as we speak – last time I saw them face to face there were three of them- now there are considerably more. Tunes keep appearing on what seems to be a daily basis and I would suggest thier own style is starting to emerge from the raft of influences in the band.

9 Peter Hook and The Light – Pictures – 11022011 : another tune(age) from the new EP and thanks to Mr Monty for the nod in this direction and….

10 Codeine – Atmosphere – A Means to an End : The Music of Joy Division : keeping with the “Atmospheric” theme (see how I did that) a reading of the aforementioned classic by the New York slowcore trio….an interesting if somewhat tense reading in keeping with Codeine’s methodology, as it were.

11 The Overeasies – Come Over Here – Reverbnation Track

12 Belle Vue – Quite Love – Belle Vue

13 Rawcuss -TV Fantasies – Single

14 Positronik – Give Me Some Passion – Demo Track : and to round things off another band on at Mayfest on Saturday and also performing their debut gig. A rather groovy website has been put together and gives some initial clues about the band.

Salford Music Scene – 29th March 2011

  1. The Inflictors – Mojo Rising – Unreleased Demo Track – the blues infused garage rock of The Inflictors is best appreciated in a live setting and you can see them at Sounds from the other City – Helmets for Men Stage on May 1st – at the Crescent – and Mayfest at Islington Mill on May 21st. Cameron O’Hagan has some new tunes up his sleeve and the band have a great sound. This track is from a jam session recorded last year and proves the often forgotten fact that you can do some rather remarkable things using one chord – Facebook
  2. Sandbox – Thin Ice – the Jon Coupe Archive – also playing at the Crescent are three-quarters of Sandbox who are currently finalising their album whilst drummer Andy Gilmore is in the Far East. They write great songs as exemplified by the four tracks provided to the show via their biggest fan the sartorially eloquent Mr Salford Music – Jon Coupe – Facebook
  3. Flying Gypsy – Bank Jobs in Baghdad – Unreleased Demo Track – essentially the work of Ordsall based Josh Ingham – his melodic approach to electronica, together with intelligent use of sounds and palettes makes for an intriguing and thought provoking listening experience. Check out his work on My Space
  4. The Souls – Stalactites – Unreleased Demo Track – the brightest thing to come out of Salford in a while with a great line in songs and a fantastic new sound – subject to finding a bass player will be playing Mayfest on May 21st – Facebook
  5. Sandbox – A Million Marlborough Lights – the Jon Coupe Archive
  6. The Overeasies – It’s Me – Unreleased Demo Track – Salford based trio who are playing at SCRs Auction Night on April 8th  – Facebook
  7. Sandbox – All of this used to be fields – the Jon Coupe Archive
  8. Mandrake – No One Ever Says Goodbye – Glory Days – as played before, due to the vagaries of the postal system the new album has not got to me yet. A rather fine band with a good melodic feel but who can rock out when the mood takes them – Facebook
  9. Danny Short – Shining City – Love Has Gone – from the new album. He has a new single out soon – Facebook
  10. Flying Gypsy – The things that make us what we are today – Unreleased Demo Track
  11. Sandbox – Mother Knows Best –  the Jon Coupe Archive
  12. The Inflictors – One of Understanding – The Inflictors
