Salford Music Scene – 18th October 2011

So,well and here we are again……a trundle through the music scene around and about the Salford and Greater Manchester area……

On this show……

  • The Happy Fallen – Sold Gaze – Neal James continues to supply us with a raft of great tunes – this finds him on a motorik tip…..
  • The Vanity Project – Structure of An Atom – a three piece from East Lancs who started earlier this year. Haunting and memorable acoustic music which makes a welcome change from the music purported to be nu-folk.
  • Danny Short – Your Kingdom – Another track from our free download “Every Now & Then”  which you can get here. Here Dan demonstrates his skill with melody on a beautiful song with one of those choruses that sticks in your head.
  • The Loaded Dice – Hollow Man – from the new album “Hindsight of a brand new soul – Halo of Fire Flies” which is out on November 5th. Based in Manchester but originally from Dolgellau. Powerful and melodic, energetic and careful not to adopt the usual rock tropes, this band have produced five albums to date and have another in the pipeline.
  • Shoshin – City of Patience – the title track from an album which has had pretty extensive play on this show  – a band you need to catch soon as they are very good indeed.
  • The Vanity Project – We Will Rise
  • Kill for Company – Mind Over Mouth – another track from the very productive and dynamic duo……the fifth track on the “Money Now EP” – lots more of there stuff here
  • Veladrome – Violent Deer – new track from Tom and Lisa which is rather fine indeed, atmospheric and ambient and building into something rather marvellous – catch them at Alter Ego in Manc this Saturday (22nd October).
  • Danny Short – Unknown, Alone
  • Well North of Watford – Make Sense of Loneliness – as featured previously in acoustic version this artist from Little Hulton has been in studio ….
  • The Loaded Dice – Maniac
  • Martin Bramah – When Sleep Won’t Come – Martin did a solo session for me last year as part of the Reformation show and I thought i’d have a listen to it again and I liked it so much I thought I would play a track from it again – this song is also on the “Enter Castle Perilous” album of which…..
  • Factory Star – Fall of GB – there will be some discussions about album of the year amongst the SCR DJ Alliance about album of the year but I think this one will be getting a fair few votes as the front runner. A christmas single “Lucybel” will be out soon
  • The Fall – Rebellious Jukebox – a classic from the first Fall album completing a trio of Bramah related tunes to conclude the show…..

Salford Music Scene – Salford Against the Cuts Special

A veritable cornucopia of aural loveliness a lot of it being focused on bands that are playing at the Salford Against the Cuts gig  on Friday night at Islington Mill:
1 Mountains – Thousand Square  Air Museum – is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, a Brooklyn duo that specializes in the kind of ultra-layered, birds-eye instrumental statements that often aim to match the scale of their name. “Thousand Square” hails from their forthcoming Air Museum LP (out May 10 via Thrill Jockey), an effort that finds them taking their earthen, largely acoustic take on soundscaping, and sending it through an array of pedals and modular synthesizers to craft a true “electronic” odyssey. Check it out here if you want to listen at your own leisure  Mountains: “Thousand Square”.  Why are you playing this on Salford Music Scene Robert? Ah well that’s because they are on at Islington Mill, tonight.
2 Death to the Strange – Closer – Demo : number two on the bill on Friday, and if they are as good as they were last Saturday at Islington Mill (Mayfest) you are in for a treat. Expect harmonies, a funky rhythm section, and Mr Sewells’s aural adventures.
3 Tangerine Dream – Cloudburst Flight – Force Majeure : they are playing at the Lowry at Saturday. It is not cheap mind so I thought I would play a track to compensate those who cannot afford it. As requested by my favourite Glaswegian band “We Are Creosote”.
4 Class Actions – Risking Everything – from the website : expect polemic ridden lyrics with a strong message across a backdrop of electronica. Also playing the Cuts gig.
5 Well North of Watford – Number One – Demo Track : another tune from Little Hulton’s newest singer-songwriter.
6 The Black Lights – Alone – In the Dark : Jamie McCool has one has one of the most memorable voices on the local scene at the moment – check out the EP and listen. If these guys don’t break through to the big time there ain’t no justice in the world.
7 Irma Vep -The Feeling Has Gone – via Tony T : Welsh born, Manchester based musician/dancer Edwin Stevens records and performs his solo material under the pseudonym Irma Vep along with sometime collaborator Dylan ‘DBO’ Hughes who both play in the popular nu-reggae group Klaus Kinski. Not sure who is going to turn up at the Cuts gig but someone will be there no doubt.
8 First Offence – Government Decides – via Tony T : a blast from the past – it seemed appropriate to play this.
9 Gods Gift – Another Government Day – Exclusive Track : God’s Gift are back after a 27 year absence with a reworking of an old number by Stephen Murphy especially produced to support the cuts gig. We are currently working out a way to get this out there to all the fans.
10 Trojan Horse – Laces and Racists – Trojan Horse : topping the bill at the Cuts gig the rather splendid and incredibly hirsute prog-meisters from sunny Eccles. If you have not got their album by now shame on you! Here is a recent interview.
11 Well North of Watford – Burst Right Out – Demo Track : another track from the troubadour out of the lands beyond Walkden.
12 The Fall – Mod Mock Goth – (We Wish You) A Protein Christmas : touring again and due in Manchester soon for a gig – any excuse to play them and of course our very own Ding is on the bass guitar on this one.

Salford Music Scene – 10th May 2011

Firstly let me say that there is a fundamental error at the beginning of and at several other points some way into the show where I describe a gig at Islington Mill on Friday, what I meant to say was Thursday, it’s because I didn’t reverse the polarity of the neutron flow when I was putting the show together.

So to make it absolutely clear the Fucked Up/Kong gig is on Thursday not Friday!

Apologies.

Anyway on this weeks show more than a healthy selection of some of the excellent new music in the city at the moment including the very excellent new releases by Doctrines and Belle Vue, bits from our latest free download from Walkden’s finest The Souls, and more previews of the bands playing at the Mayfest event on May 21st.

Also I am pleased to note that bands have advised me that they have got bookings and promoter interest after being heard on the show…..that’s very gratifying the hear.

The play list for the show is…..

  1. Emperor Zero – Mental Health Cafe – Sways Mixtape
  2. Doctrines – Dirty Dirty Animals – O This Body Of Mine I Renounce You Your Style Is A Crime

Salford Music Scene – April 12th 2011

  1. The Hired Help – Perfect Society – Direct from the artist – Simon “Ding” Archer has been operating “The Hired Help” for a number of years – Ding started the project back in 2004 with Josh Klinghoffer and since then has collaborated with several other musicians, all of who, have at some point earned money as ‘hired help’. The  tracks on the show, and in this instance, feature Tamsin A. The opener builds on the “classic” TV series “Logan’s Run” but goes somewhere else entirely. Magical stuff.
  2. Trojan Horse – Mr Engels Says – Trojan Horse – from the marvelous debut album which Tony Thornborough has been focusing of late. I was hoping to promo the Japanchester gigs that Nick from the band has been organizing on this show and on the following night’s Aural Delights but a combination of senility and other distractions means this sort of got kicked into touch. I reviewed the album some time back- this is the opening track which is rather fine indeed.
  3. Johann Kloos – Arndale – Direct from the artist – aka Ha Ha Said The Car – Johann plays guitar/keyboards in the excellent Sandells – he sent me a compilation of his work a few weeks back and I was very impressed by his material – he writes cinematic pieces as well as excellent songs – on tonight’s show a couple of his more ambient pieces.
  4. Flying Gypsy – Hailies Song – Direct from the artist – more music from the very talented John Lynam from Ordsall.
  5. Samir Harmim – Midnight – Quixotic – the exemplary balladeer with a great song – check him out on Bandcamp.
  6. The Rat Catchers – The Ballad of Billy Unsworth – Direct from the artist – the song is aimed to be released officially later in the year and be used to raise charitable resources for servicemen and ex-servicemen. More details will follow. A salutory tale of the horrors of war and of the heroism of the working class.
  7. The Hired Help – Feeling Graceless – Direct from the artist – as above.
  8. Well North of Watford – Stand Tall – Direct from the artist – another tune from a singer songwriter from Little Hulton.
  9. Ghost Outfit – I was good when I was young – Pre-release – will be released on Salford’s own Sways lable in due course – watch this duo they are going places!
  10. Johann Kloos – Market Street – Direct from the artist – as above.
  11. The Black Knights – Creep Night – Free Download – the strangely erotic and sartorially elegant masters of sleaze with a new song which is a free download from thier site.
  12. Gnod – A Very Special Request – Bored Fortress (split with Robedoor) – more psychedelic gorgeousness from the wonderful Gnod.

Salford Music Scene – Show Number 2 – March 1st 2010

Note the catchy new intro jingle thingy……by a certain band……

Anyway on tonights extravaganza

  1. The Asteria – You Look Good Tonight – Self released single – as discovered by Mr Thornborough and Mr Legge in their weekly focus on local talent. An exciting new band with a lot of potential – check them out on their website. They play Manchester Academy on April 15th.
  2. Well North of Watford – Run Deep – Demo Track – he plays the Willows on 27th, he’s been around the scene for a few years and this is his new solo project – check him out on My Space.
  3. Trojan Horse – Patricroft Way – Trojan Horse – from their debut album on Bandcamp which is a snip at £2. I doubt if they will be listening to the show as they are playing Academy 3 at the same time. You can catch them at Kraak Gallery on the 5th March. For the record there isn’t a road/street called Patricroft Way – the song is about the way people are in Patricroft (it’s in Eccles where the show is actually recorded!).
  4. The Fall – Petty (Thief Lout) – This Nation’s Saving Grace (Omnibus Edition) – indulgent behaviour by me in playing some Fall but MES is a Salford chap so he qualifies and I’ve always reckoned this was one of their better tunes. My increasingly out of date website on the gruppe is here – which reminds me I must spend some time updating it!
  5. The Fall – Cruisers Creek (Peel Session Version) – This Nation’s Saving Grace (Omnibus Edition) – as above and a nod towards those who feel that is one of the gruppes better albums, of not the best….don’t agree myself but this is another damn fine tune from the Fall canon.
  6. The Chanteuse and the Crippled Claw – Big Umbrella – Website download – Mister Adrian Flanagan is a Broughtonian who has been exorcised to Sheffield for over familiarity with small synthesizers. I happen to think he is a song writing genius as evidenced by this gorgeous duet with Candie Payne. More evidence of the man’s capabilities here.
  7. Stonestreet – One Dead Game – Single – they are from Latvia and they are residing in Salford at the moment.
  8. Missed You At the Show – Na Na Na – EP – a fine band currently being taught music and stuff at Salford University. I’ve played them before on the Aural Delights Show……My Space … they play Dry Bar on March 23rd and that thing at the Willows on March 27th
  9. The Souls – Supply and Demand – Demo Track – the immensely talented and rather wonderful Souls are coming to get you. Mr Thornborough had them on his show this monday and played this very track. Mind you you can’t have too much of a good thing.  Read more here
  10. The Happy Fallen – Move On – Demo Track – Mr Neil James is a very prolific man and this is his latest recording.
  11. Twinkle and Co – Jock Tally – Demo Track – if Dusty Springfield and Noel Gallagher had a child it would be making music like this. The 60s meet the crazy Madchester sound in a riot of fun!Info here.
  12. Gnod/White HIlls – Per Sempre –Drop Out – the psychedelic warlords of the Manchester/Salford scene – a prolific collective which releases fine music – check out their back catalogue here.
